The island of Sumba has been well known as a trading island for many years with sandalwood, horses, impressive megalithic tombs and the ikat hand woven cloths that are still made in the traditional fashion today. Sumba has an area of 11,150 square km and only has a population of 350,000 people. The easiest and only ways to enter the island is by boat and are Waingapu and Waikabubak. This means it is a little difficult to travel here compared with other islands in Indonesia and South East Asia which it turn means that this is an area where you can be guaranteed a cultural experience and an unspoiled landscapes. The climate in Sumba is similar to the rest of Indonesia and supports a dry season between May and November and a rainy season between December and April. As well as being known for its sandalwood exports, Sumba also has fantastic perfect beaches and plenty of experiences that are both cultural and physical such as the mountains and volcanoes. Sumba is island that has very different characteristics in terms of Scenery and geography to all of its surrounding islands and is one a very peculiar rock meaning that you are guaranteed a unique experience when you embark on a tour to Sumba. |
