Most of South Kalimantan remains in its natural and beautiful glory with a great cultural aspect which runs through the whole area. There are to regions which are separated by the Meratus Mountains and in these two regions you will see a distinct difference in the physicalaities of the island as well as the culture. In both of these regions there are a number of different districts with a diverse range of landscapes including the mountains of the northern area of the province running down to the hills and then the lowlands of the south where you will find many rivers flowing into the mangrove and swamps areas. There are many settlements and villages located around the River Barito where you will find the indigenous minority known as the Banjar living in traditional villages. These creative people deal in interesting products often including precious and semi-precious stones as well as gold and silver which are all available at very low rates.

The capital city of the Province is Bajarmasin which is located close to the delta of the Barito River and offers a mix of modern and traditional scenes and businesses. Most of these have some kind of link to the waterways which are extensively used in transport and communications in mush the traditional way offering a huge part of the culture which is still clearly a large part of modern life around the southern areas of South Kalimantan. There are floating markets and villages located along the busier areas of the Barito River as well as some of the smaller rivers that pass large settlements. You can try many types of local fruits and rare spices as well as local dishes. The waterways have been a large part of the South Kalimantan culture and there is a great festival known as the Mappanrestasi which is a sea offering ceremony around the Pagatan area in April in the sea with the presence of San Ro, the chief of the Adat.

There are a number of different places to see which you are staying in the incredible and beautiful area of South Kalimantan. These include the small tropical Paradise Island of Kembang Island on the Barito River and the Kaget Island located an hour away from the capital where you will find a great variety of wildlife from tropical birds to the Bekantan long-nosed red monkeys. As well as this there is plenty of opportunity to take part in a whole variety of different tours and treks as well as the river rafting at Amandit and there are more and more hotels popping up and other tourist facilities meaning you can relax and enjoy a bit of tropical luxury or adventure into the wilderness and see some of the awesome and beautiful sights that South Kalimantan has to offer.
