Rinca Island is one of the three main islands of the Komodo National Park located in East Nusa Tenggara. Komodo is situated between Sumbaya and Flores and is usually accessed from Labuan Bajo of west Flores where you can fly direct from Bali and other airports and then head straight out into the National Park on a boat.
Rinca Island is the closest and easiest Island to reach out of all the islands in the Komodo National making it ideal for those who want to see the fantastic scenery of the Komodo National Park and its strange and magnificent inhabitants such as the infamous Komodo Dragons. Rinca Island also has the advantage of being less frequented than Komodo and the other islands which are the main spot that tourists like to spend time. This means that as well as seeing all of the incredible animals on the Rinca Island and enjoying the perfect white sand beaches and perfect diving and snorkeling conditions.
Due the Rinca Island being located in the Komodo National Park is it therefore east of the Wallace Line which passes through Indonesia separating the type of land and the flora and fauna from the Asian (in the west) and Australasian (to the east). This makes the land dryer and the marine life incredible. Rinca Island can be visited exclusively which is great for those who are pressed for time, it can also be visited as part of a longer trip through the Komodo National Park including the other major islands of Komodo and Padar. The latter option is advisable for people who want to multiple dives in the Komodo National Park and really make the most of their time out of the water as well. Diversity above the water is nothing like what is visible below the water; you will find that in this harsh landscape there is not much that can survive on the low nutrient bio system. You will see deer, pigs, macaques and civets as well as the reptiles and birds that are or Australian origin. The forests and plains seem dense with plant life away from the desert areas and you will find clear blue and turquoise waters in the lagoons which entice all in to paddle and snorkel.
The beautiful National Park of Komodo is now a world heritage site and there is so much beauty within it. Rinca is often overlooked as a place to see the sights as it is close to Komodo and therefore means that it is not as worthwhile trip for the boat drivers and possibly due to the Komodo Island’s prestigious name. Either way, with a huge number of birds and mammals to see as well as the incredible and beastly Komodo Dragons which can not be seen in their natural habitat anywhere else in the world. There are also the museums that exhibit the tiny Human species and the giant rats that used to live in the Komodo National Park.
